Over Summer 2022, I interned at the Baylor Global Health department of Baylor College of Medicine to develop an intervention to reduce the maternal and infant mortality rate in The Gambia.
Maternal Mortality
The Maternal Mortality Rate for the Gambia is 289 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births (Gambia Department of Health Services, 2019-2020).
Childhood Mortality
Infant and under-5 mortality rates for the 5-year period before the survey are 42 and 56 deaths per
1,000 live births, respectively (Gambia Department of Health Services, 2019-2020). .
Gambia ranks among the top 10 countries with high maternal mortality rate in the world (United Nations, 2017). There were approximately 520 maternal deaths in 2017 in Gambia with the maternal mortality ratio of 597 i.e. 597 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births (UNICEF, 2019). There is a 31% chance in the Gambia that a 15 year old, in the year of estimate, will eventually die of a maternal cause (UNICEF Data Warehouse, 2019).
