Practicum Competency Matrix
Baylor’s CEPH affiliation requires MPH students to acquire crucial competencies during the program that they demonstrate during their practicum. Here are the competencies that I proposed to acquire during the internship. You can download the pdf here.
Explanation of Competency Matrix
My internship at Baylor College of Medicine equipped me with significant competencies to prepare me for my global health epidemiology career. My practicum involved performing literature searches and needs assessments on Gambia child and maternal health and developing a curriculum to train the medical staff on the smart pods supplied by Baylor College of Medicine.
My project entailed identifying and analyzing studies on clinical health practice in the Gambia. The competencies I leveraged are crucial in assessing Gambia's maternal and child health status. Since the Gambia is a small country in West Africa, the product I worked on will influence the maternal health status of the whole country. Moreover, since this is a global setting, the practicum allowed me to implement the cultural competencies while also identifying the differences in the health status between US and Gambia.
Furthermore, I developed a clinical training program for the medical staff in the Gambia. There is a massive difference in the clinical resources and capacity between US and Gambia. Thus, BCM has developed smart pods with all the maternal health-related resources to be shipped and used in the Gambia. The clinical curriculum development will allow training of the medical staff in the Gambia to foster maternal health practice. The clinical curriculum development enabled me to utilize/ improve MPH competencies 5, 8, and 9 and EPI competencies 1 and 2.
